Why Category Precision Is Your Local SEO Secret Weapon: Insights From 1.8 Million Google Business Profiles

Why Category Precision Is Your Local SEO Secret Weapon: Insights From 1.8 Million Google Business Profiles

A Whitespark study published on Search Engine Land analysed 1.8 million Google Business Profiles across 4,209 categories to find out what actually drives local pack rankings. The numbers are more concrete than most local SEO advice. and we see the same patterns across over 50 GBP clients we manage.

How Do Google Business Profile Categories Impact Local Pack Rankings?

Businesses using a specific primary category achieved approximately 36% higher top-10 rankings than those using generic ones (12.5% vs. 9.2%). “Plumber” outranked “contractor.” “Personal injury attorney” outranked “attorney.” The more precisely your category describes what you actually do, the better.

Secondary categories made a significant difference even more in some industries. Plumbers who added “drainage service” as a secondary category saw a 54-position ranking improvement. Veterinarians who added “emergency veterinarian service” gained 51 positions. Electricians who added “EV charging station contractor” gained 47.

Profile completeness showed a similar pattern. Profiles with all five key elements (website, description, hours, photos, claimed status) averaged a rank of 43. Blank profiles averaged rank 62 or a 19-position gap. Top-10 appearance rates tripled, from 4% to 13%, between the least and most complete profiles.

That last point carries weight. 82% of searches have local intent, and local searches convert at around 80% and most businesses are looking for customers in the wrong places. The gap between a fully optimised profile and a half-filled one shows up directly in calls, visits, and revenue.

How to Optimise Your Google Business Profile Categories (5-Step Checklist)

Most businesses claim the listing, add a phone number, and leave it there. Here’s what separates the profiles that rank from the ones that don’t:

  1. Choose a specific primary category. Look at what your best-ranked local competitors have selected, then go one level deeper if the option exists. “Thai restaurant” beats “restaurant.” “Emergency plumber” beats “plumber.”
  2. Add secondary categories. Most profiles skip these entirely. If you’re a plumber who also does drainage or gas fitting, those are separate categories and separate pools of searches you’re absent from.
  3. Complete the service menu. Google uses this to match your profile to specific service searches. If it’s empty, you’re relying on your category alone to do the work.
  4. Keep your hours accurate. Profiles with mismatched or missing hours get flagged in Google’s quality signals. Update them for public holidays for most businesses don’t.
  5. Post regularly. Weekly posts (updates, offers, photos) signal an active business and keep your profile visible in searches where recency is a factor.

Those five steps are the GBP-specific work. If you want to cover the full local SEO picture including NAP consistency, reviews, and local keywords, our local SEO guide covers the rest.

Does Optimising Your Google Business Profile Increase Calls and Web Traffic?

Clean Australia Service is one example. After a full profile and local SEO overhaul, they recorded an 86.3% increase in web traffic, a 59% increase in phone calls, and a 63% improvement in Google Maps visibility. Results vary by industry and competition level, but the pattern holds: a properly optimised profile compounds over time.

If you’d rather not manage this yourself, our Google My Business Management Service covers the full scope: category optimisation, weekly content, review management, and monthly reporting on calls, visits, and direction requests.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does changing my primary category affect my existing rankings?

It can, short-term. Switching to a more specific category may cause some movement while Google re-evaluates your relevance signals. In most cases, rankings recover and improve within a few weeks.

How many secondary categories should I add?

Add every category that genuinely describes a service you offer. Don't add categories to appear for searches you can't actually serve. Google's quality systems flag this, and so do competitors who report spam listings.

How often should I update my profile?

At minimum, monthly. Weekly posts, photo uploads, and any changes to hours or services keep the profile active. A stale profile tends to slide in competitive local markets.

What does ongoing Google Business Profile management involve?

Category audits, weekly posts, review responses, Q&A management, monthly performance reporting, and competitor monitoring (including spam listing reports). It's more than most business owners have time to do consistently, which is why rankings slip.
